We distinguish between the relative and absolute refractive index. The absolute refractive index is defined as a ratio of the speed of light in vacuum and in selected medium. ... Relative refractive index is defined as a ratio of speeds of light in twodifferent media.

S7SOUMYA: are relative refractive index and refractive index same?
laynahaycraft: yes it can be

Hii,

Refractive index is a measure of how much the speed of light changes when it entres the medium from air.

Whereas ,

Absolute refractive index is the ratio of the speed of the light in vacuum or air to the speed of light in the medium. it is denoted by n.

HOPE IT WILL HELP YOU..... :-)
