Both the smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum help in theproduction and storage of proteins The main difference is that one contains ribosomes on it and the other does not. The rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) has ribosomes on its surface. ... The SERhelps in the storage of proteins and lipids.

Rough endoplasmic reticulum:-
1. When we examine this organelle under the microscope it appears to be rough.
2. Ribosomes are present on the surface of this organelle.
3. It is known for proteins as ribosomes present on its surface manufactures proteins and they are transported to other organelles.
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum:-
1. It appears to be smooth when examined under microscope.
2. There is nothing present on its surface due to which it appears to be smooth.
3. It manufactures fats and lipids. Thus, it is very important for membrane biogenesis.
Hope this helps you:-)
