Megapixels is the "resolution" of your camera: sorry about that but I didn't choose the word. If you have a 3 Mp camera, the photo will be represented by that many individual elements: pixels.
Now that you have taken the picture,you have to store it somewhere: in this case on a memory card. When you choose Good, Better, Best with regard to memory storage, you are now talking about the "resolution" of what is stored.
To reduce the storage requirements, algorithms were developed to "look" at the image and attempt to reduce the supposed redundant data. This process is called Compression. The more compression, the smaller amount of data is stored.
