Shaft: A shaft is a metallic, rotating and oscillating rod that rotates continually to transfer movements or torque in the machine. Shaft is usually used to connect other components of machine that cannot be connected due to distance between them and to allow relative motion between them.

Rod: A connecting rod is a shaft which connects a piston to a crank or crankshaft in a reciprocating engine. Together with the crank, it forms a simple mechanism that converts reciprocating motion into rotating motion.
