Shut is less formal and can be a little less polite than close. ! Signs on shop doors always say closed (not shut), to state that they are not open. Signs on shop doors say 'closed', not 'shut'.Though people seem to use shut and close alternatively, there actually exists a difference between shut and close. The word close is used as a verb and a noun .
