Silk will only burn as long as the source of flame is in contact with it.

polyester or other synthetic (man-made) threads are flammable (unlike silk).

Answer:

  • Silk: Burns slowly, but does not melt. It shrinks from the flame. It has the odor of charred meat (some say like burned hair). The residue is a black, hollow irregular bead that can be easily to a gritty, grayish-black ash powder.

  • polyster: Ignites and burns quickly and can continue to burn after a flame is removed. Fiber may shrink from the flame, melt, and can drip (DANGER) leaving a hard plastic-like bead. Burning these fabrics will produce black smoke and hazardous fumes.
