A single fixed pulley does not produce any mechanical advantage , it only changes the direction of the force . A movable single pulley attaches to an object you are trying to move . A single movable pulley does produce a mechanical advantage of 1 to 2 . It doubles the force you apply to a rope , but it does change the direction of force except on the stationary end of the rope that is tied off.
