Sink is the act of submerging under water. Like when an object thrown in water weighs more than the water it displaces, it sinks down. So, we can have a sinking ship, a sunk boat, a sunk box etc. Drown means suffocating under water and dying.

Drowning is becoming dead because of inability to breathe, due to submersion of your head. Sinking is your body falling below the surface toward the bottom. Although one cannot sink without drowning, because as one goes under one's head is submerged; one can drown without sinking, as dead bodies often float.
