\huge{\underline{\underline{\sf{Endoplasmic \ Reticulum}}}}

Endoplasmic Reticulum is a network of fine tubes and tubules arranged in the cytoplasm of an eukaryotic cell

★ER is situated around the nucleus of the cell

★On the basis of presence of ribosomes,it can be divided into rough endoplasmic reticulum and smooth endoplasmic reticulum

Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum

  • RER is rough on its surface because of the presence of ribosomes

  • It is actively involved in protein synthesis

  • The proteins synthesized by the RER eventually become glycoproteins and are transported outside of the cell

  • Gives rise to the SER

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum

  • Ribosomes aren't present on the SER,thus accounting for their smooth surface

  • They perform Lipogenesis,i.e.synthesis of lipids

  • The lipids they produced are involved in Membrane Biogenesis and Detoxification of drugs
