A specular reflection is what you get from a polished surface, or mirror. It is clear, and you can see "through" the mirror. A diffuse reflection is what you get from a white wall. The light is bounced of it, but in random directions so you cannot see the light source in the reflection.

Reflection can be categorized into two categories, specular reflection, and diffused reflection.

  • Specular reflection: It is defined as light reflected from a smooth surface at a definite angle. Smooth surfaces such as a mirror reflect all of the components of white light equally and the reflected light is of the same angle as the normal, as the incident light.
  • Diffused reflection: It is produced by rough surfaces that reflect light in all directions. We observe diffuse reflection a lot more than specular reflection in the everyday environment. Rough surfaces like walls do not reflect all wavelengths as it absorbs a few components of light. Also, the reflected light, in this case, is scattered in all directions.

These are the major differences between specular reflection and diffused reflection.
