What is the difference between Speed and Velocity? And why do they have the same symbol 'V'?

speed is a scalar quantity whereas velocity is a vector quantity.speed is calculated by distance upon time whereas velocity is calculated by displacement upon time. retake single be for a convenience to show both speed either velocity.

Speed gets the symbol v (italic) and velocity gets the symbol v (boldface). Average values get a bar over the symbols.
