What is the difference between sperm and ovum?

Sperm
>has a tale for locomotion
>male gamete cell
>can be released more than twice a week
>can survive in womb for 3-5 days
>Can carry two types of chromosomes 'X' and 'Y'

Ovum
>oval in shape doesn't moves on its own
>female gamete cell
>Can carry only one type of chromosome 'X'
>released only once in a single month
>Can survive in fallopian tube for 12-14 hrs

Sperm:

1. Sperms are produced in the testes.

2. Four sperms are formed from one spermatogonium.

3. It is differentiated into head, neck, middle piece and tail.

4. It has very small amount of cytoplasm.

5. Mitochondria form a spiral in the middle piece.

6. Sperm is motile and penetrates the ovum by releasing lysing enzymes (e.g., hyaluronidase).

Ovum:

1. Ova are produced in the ovaries.

2. Only one ovum is formed from one oogonium.

3. It is not externally differentiated into regions.

4. It has a large amount of cytoplasm called ooplasm.

5. Mitochondria are scattered in the ooplasm.

6. Ovum is non-motile.
