Sri Lankan Tamils apply to those who migrated over to Sri Lanka during the times of the Great Chola empire of Tamil Nadu around 1000 AD and primarily dwelled around the northerly and eastward part of the nation. They were better instructed and economically prosperous during territorial times. In a way, they can be regarded as fundamental residents of Sri Lanka similar to Sinhalese.

Indian Tamils regard to those Tamils who were introduced into Sri Lanka by British in the middle of the 19th century essentially as plantation workers. They are even now found in the interior mountains of  Nuwara Eliya and Kandy, essentially as they are the tea heartland. Their literacy and economic situation are much inferior to the Sri Lankan Tamils.
