There is a drastic change in the character of the convict from before and after the candlesticks incident. Before the incident, the convict is like a wild beast. He is hungry and is ready to do anything to satisfy his hunger. He behaves with absolute no respect towards the Bishop and his sister. He has lost faith in religion and in life. Even with his rude attitude and behaviour, the Bishop treats him like a friend. He provides him with food and drink and gives him a place for the night along with a blanket to protect him from the cold. After the candlesticks incident, the Bishop saves him from the sergeant by telling him that the Convict was his friend and that he had gifted him his silver candlesticks. The Convict is shocked by how the Bishop is not angry with him and realises his mistake. He now starts to have faith in God as the Bishop tells him that his heart is the temple of God. The temple of the Living God.
