A lagoon is an area formed by sea water separated from the ocean water by means of a line of sand or rock.

On the contrary, a sandbar or a shoal is a landform that occurs partly or fully in a water body. Such landform is made up of silt, sand and pebble particles.

A lagoon is described as a small water body which is separated from the larger water body by many barriers and reefs.

The lagoons can be of two types - coastal and atoll.

A sandbar is a landscape which is made up of sand or pebbles and offers land in the middle of a water body.
