if the particles of the medium vibrate along the direction of wave , the wave is called a longitudinal wave.it involves change in the density of medium. where as if the particles of the medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction of wave then it is called transverse wave. it involves change in the shape of the medium..
sound wave is a longitudinal wave, where as light wave is transverse wave...
