What is the difference between umbra and penumbra?

Umbra is the region of total darkness whereas penumbra is the region of partial darkness.

Difference between Penumbra and umbra are:

Umbra is a central dark region of total darkness as no ray of light enters in this region.
Penumbra is a partially dark region at the edges and it receives a few light rays and so is partially illuminated.
