acids have H+ ion
they're sour
It turns blue litmus paper red
acids don't have alkalis
oxides of non metals are acidic

bases haven OH+ ion
they're sharp and have astringent taste
bases turn blue litmus paper red
all alkalis are bases
oxides of metals dissolve in water form bases

To determine whether a substance is an acid or a base, count the hydrogens on each substance before and after the reaction. If the number of hydrogens has decreased that substance is the acid (donates hydrogen ions). If the number of hydrogens has increased that substance is the base (accepts hydrogen ions).
