Energy basically is the ability to do work. It can exist in many forms for example heat energy, light energy, chemical energy, etc. It can neither be created nor be destroyed. It can only be changed from one form to another.

On the other hand, petroleum is a source of energy. Burning of petroleum releases energy in the form of heat and light. It can be converted to other forms for it's utilisation. For example in vehicles.
