what is the difference in the in the atomic model of Thomas and Rutherford s
Answers
Explanation:
J.J Thompson proposed his atomic model in 1904. According to him, an atom consists of positively charged sphere in which negatively charged electrons are embedded. The model is conpared with a watermelon in which seeds are embedded or with a cake or pudding in which raisins are embedded. Owing to this, Thompson's model is also called plum pudding model or watermelon model.
Thompson's model was not able to explain many experimental results about atoms. So, this model was rejected.
On the basis of gold foil scattering experiment Rutherford's atom model consists of two parts.
- Nucleus is very small in size carrying positive charge and the entire mass of the atom is concentrated.
- Extra nuclear part is the space around the nucleus in which the electrons are distributed
Drawbacks: Rutherford's model was not able to explain the stability of an atom. When elections move around the nucleus in circular paths, they will lose energy and fall into the nucleus. Thus, the existence of an atom couldn't be explained
Something more to know about question-
There are four type of Atomic model-
- Thompson's Atomic Model
- Rutherford's Atomic Model
- Bohr's Atomic Model
- Erwin Schrodinger's Atomic Model
