Art critics might have a different take, but my take is:
1) Impressionism is still representational, but with more focus on light and shadow and the effects on objects in different lighting.
2) Expressionism isn’t representational. It can be raw or meticulous, but it doesn’t look like real objects in real space. It’s about ideas and feelings.
3) Cubism is extrapolated from reality, but it’s meant to show motion and/or depth in different ways than western culture and cartoons/animations depict them.
All of these forms are abstracted from reality, but they are not reality itself. Surprise!
