Charcoal is wood that had been heated without access to air. Thus, it can't be burnt. The carbon remains but most of the other chemicals are driven of by the heat. So, charcoal is just a piece of carbon, more brittle than wood. Wood can be burnt but charcoal can't. Charcoal is also used for daily products (like toothpaste) but wood is mostly used for furniture.
