CARBINE
Definition - A firearm with a shorter barrel lenght than a full length rifle.
Carbine sometimes can be a short length version of a particular rifle. In that case it has a shorter barrel than the rifle version of the gun. In some cases a carbine can use a smaller cartridge too.
Example -
M4 carbine is a short version of the M16A2 ( a full length rifle )
M1 Carbine is a short length rifle ( though it resembles the M1 Garand, it's not a carbine version of the latter)
AKS-74U is a carbine version of the AK-74 rifle series
ASSAULT RIFLE
This term is a bit complicated. Some western people don't consider assault rifle a term at all. The widely accepted definition is - A firearm with selective fire, box magazine and intermediate cartridge.
This means that for a rifle to be considered Assault Rifle, it has to have all 4 of these characteristics. If it lacks any one of the characteristics, it's not an Assault Rifle.
Should have a selective fire option. This means the rifle would have at least 3 options- Safe, Full auto and Semi Auto .
Should have an intermediate cartridge. This means it should fire a cartridge smaller than full power and larger than Pistol cartridges. Intermediate cartridges are 5.56x45mm and 7.62x39mm.
Should have a detachable box magazine feeding system.
Should have a range of at least 300m.
