Tincture of iodine, or iodine tincture is a simple solution of aqueous sodium or potassium iodide and alcohol (ethanol). Since the iodide ions are absorbed at a certain rate into soft tissue (read: “skin”), its antiseptic effect is rather short-lived when compared to povidone iodine.
