They are both organic functional groups.
However, an ester is a fragment that is of the form R-CO2-R', with one oxygen forming an carbonyl (C=O) and the other oxygen connecting C and R'. R and R' are organic fragments such as methyl (CH3), ethyl (CH3CH2) and so forth.
An ether is a fragment with the general formula R-O-R'.
As you can, both have a carbon-oxygen-carbon sequence. However, if there is a carbonyl in that system, then it's an ester. Otherwise it's an ether.
