Ankara had the lottery win of becoming the capital because it was considered a place, more difficult to invade than Istanbul during the old days when the military doctrine was this way. Other than that, it had no more historical importance than most other cities in central Turkey. So, most of it was artificially built to become the capital. It is an easier city to live than Istanbul, cheaper and the center is more organized. However, apart from the area around the castle and an excellent museum, it has little to offer to the tourists. Some areas around it such as Sincan etc are considerably ugly (but so are the suburbs of Istanbul).........
