What are the consequences of homicide at work?
ON WITNESSES INSIDE THE ORGANIZATION
Employees having witnessed a homicide in their workplace suffer an emotional shock which often translates into feelings of insecurity, deterioration of their work environment, decrease in their performance. Those who have worked closely or for a long time with the victim will be the most affected, having to deal with the loss of a colleague and that of a friend as well.
The organization should be able to set in place an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to help employees overcome this ordeal and regain confidence in themselves and their workplace. This would include, amongst others, assistance from psychologists and other experts through individual consultations, group therapy or crisis help lines.
ON THE ORGANIZATION
The organization affected by a homicide should review its policies and procedures in regards to security and the prevention of conflicts. In certain cases, the organization's responsibly for the homicide may be questioned or subjected to prosecutions by the victim’s family or traumatized employees.
At work like in any other places, a homicide attracts media attention. There are numerous examples where overzealous or amplified media coverage has put a company’s image in jeopardy and seriously hindered the efforts invested in trying to bring back harmony and security to the workplace. One must also take into consideration the fact that a highly publicized event may encourage individuals who are mentally unbalanced to follow the aggressor's unfortunate example and methods.
Thus, the organization can find itself in a crisis situation and suffer heavy financial losses (absenteeism, lower quality, lower productivity, loss of customers, etc.) as well as an increase in unforeseen expenses or contingencies (insurance premiums, settlement of lawsuits, Employee Assistance Program, Emergency Control Plan, consultants' fee, etc.).

What are the legal consequences of suicide?
Suicide is defined as the act or instance of taking one’s own life, voluntarily or intentionally, in order to escape from an unbearable psychological or physical situation.
In the workplace, a number of factors may bring about suicide:
professional difficulties (resistance to change, decrease in performance, stress, competition, conflicts or tensions);alcohol or drug dependence;loss of confidence and self-esteem, etc.Other types of workplace violence – psychological, sexual, verbal, material and financial – may also be involved, especially in the form of harassment.
Warning! Companies fuelling on stress, isolation and internal competition present higher than average risks of psychological distress – from which suicide might ensue.
What are the consequences of suicide at work?ON THOSE CLOSE TO THE VICTIM
The repercussions of suicide go beyond the victim to the victim’s loved ones, family, friends, co-workers. They become victims themselves and may suffer psychologically (mourning the loss of a loved one, shock, sorrow, emotional reactions) as well as financially (loss of income, funeral costs, problems related to legal proceedings and insurance).
Suicide makes those close to the victim question their relationship with the deceased. Some may develop a feeling of guilt and distress which they are incapable to surmount. The Task Force on Suicide in Canada even reports that people mourning the death of a person who has committed suicide are at risk of committing suicide themselves.
