The white color is often observed as light passes through a triangular prism. Upon passage through the prism, the white lightis separated into its component colors - red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet (VIBGYOR). The separation of visible light into its different colors is known as dispersion.
This phenomenon was first discovered by Sir Issac Newton.

This phenomenon helps to form Rainbow after rain in which rain droplets act as the prism to disperse ray emmited by the Sun
