Question :

What is the distance between the lower end of the ladder and the base of the wall if the ladder 17 m high is erected at the top end of the 15 m high wall?

Answer :

\sf\pink{Given:}

  • length of the ladder is 17 m.

  • length of the wall is 15 m.

\sf\pink{To\:find:}

  • distance between the lower end of ladder and the base of the wall ?

Explanation :

seg CB is the distance between the lower end of ladder and the base of the wall .

Seg CA is the length of the ladder

Seg BA is the length of wall up to which the other end of ladder is placed .

Here a right angled triangle ABC is formed that is right angled at B .

Therefore by using Pythagoras theorem ,

hypo² = base² - opposite ²

With respect to angle B

  • AC is hypotenuse

  • AB is one side

  • BC is othe side .

AC² = AB² + BC²

➡️ 17² = 15² + BC²

➡️ 289 = 225 + BC²

➡️ BC² = 289 - 225

➡️ BC² = 64

➡️ BC = √64

➡️ BC = 8

Therefore the distance of the lower end of the ladder and the base of wall is 8 m.
