Hey!!
Mostly the name of Lord Dalhousie is tagged with the policy of Doctrine of Lapse but it should be kept in mind it was in prevalence and implemented by British Court of Directors since 1834.
but Governor General Lord Dalhousie used this policy the most.
The policy meant that if any Indian ruler died without a male heir or son his or her kingdom would 'lapse', -- means would become part of Company territory or we can say would be annexed by East India Company under its suzerainty.
examples- Satara (1848), Jaipur and Sambalpur(1849), Nagpur and Jhansi (1854), Tanjore and Arcot(1855)
