The eastern extension of the central highlands of India is the Chota Nagpur plateau. Its main features are

1. The Indo-Gangetic plains lie to the north and east of Chota Nagpur plateau and the Mahanadi river lies to the south. The plateau mainly covers the state of Jharkhand.
2. The total area of the Chota Nagpur plateau is about 65000 square kilometers.
3.The average height of the plateau is 610 metres. The highest point is 1164 metres.
4. The plateau has a very attractive climate. It is neither too hot nor too cold. It receives an average rainfall of about 1400 millimetres.
