the collecting duct system is under the control of antidiueretic hormone (ADH).
when ADH is present , the collective duct become permeable to water .
The high osmotic pressure in the medulla (generated by the counter -current multiplier system / loop of Henle) then draws out the water from the renal tubule back to vasa recta .

If ADH secretion is reduced there is an increased production of urine this is called diuresis.
