By calling Brutus and
other conspirators of Caesar’s assassination as ‘honourable’ man Antony was
trying to achieve three purposes. Firstly, he was complying with the conditions
put on him by Brutus before the funeral speech according to which he was not to
blame them for Caesar’s assassination. Secondly, by calling them he ‘honourable’
he wanted to be sure regarding the Roman people’s mind and mood about Caesar’s
murder. Thirdly, he was calling them ‘honourable’ mockingly and ironically
implying Brutus and the conspirators were not honorable at all as they had
assassinated Caesar for their vested interests. He was successful in his purpose.
The Roman crowd became angry when they came to know the truth about Caesar’s
murder and asked Antony not to call Brutus and his accomplices ‘honourable’.
