Given : f(x) = 1/x

To Find :  effect on the graph when it is transformed to

g(x)= 1/(x + 9)

g(x) = 1/x  + 9

Solution:

The graph of f(x-k) is a horizontal translation of the graph of f(x) ,

For , k > 0  the graph is shifted right and for k < 0 the graph is shifted left.

f(x) = 1/x

g(x) = 1/(x + 9)

= 1/(x -(-9))

= 1/f(x - (-9))

Shift of -9 on the domain.

Hence  Graph is shifted to 9 unit on the left side ( Horizontal Translation )

The graph of f(x) + k is a horizontal translation of the graph of f(x) ,

For , k > 0  the graph is shifted up and for k < 0 the graph is shifted down

g(x) = 1/x  + 9

= f(x) + 9

Shift of 9 on the range

Hence graph is shifted to 9 units upward ( vertical translation)
