Resistance in series=R1+R2
=5ohm + 5ohm
=10 ohm

What is series ?

When the current flows through both the resistances without being divided , then such a connection is called series connection .

What is parallel ?

When the current flows through both the resistances being divided into branches, then such a connection is called parallel connection .

Here the current will through 5 ohm twice without getting divided into branches.

So : they are in series

Equivalent resistance is always added for series.

R = 5 Ω + 5 Ω

==> R = 10 Ω

The equivalent resistance is 10 Ω

Hope it helps !
