This is known as Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) and is determined by the rate of fuel consumption divided by the power produced, expressed as grams per kilowatt-hour and is a measure of the engines fuel efficiency.

The efficiency of a fuel is judged by its calorific value. Calorific value is the amount of heat produced on complete combustion of 1kg of fuel . It is expressed as KJ/ Kg ( kilojoules per kilogram) .
