An electric discharge is more commonly called a spark. It’s when the electric field (voltage between two points divided by the distance between the points) is so high in a gap separated by a gas, usually air, that the electrons are ripped away from their gas atoms, accelerated in the field tearing away additional electrons from gas atoms and resulting in a cascade of negatively charged electrons and positively charged ions “shorting out” the gap
