Given,

R.M.M of Mg = 24 g, N = 14 g

Given Mass of Mg = 18 g, N = 7 g

Moles of Mg = 18/24

= 0.75

Moles of N = 7/14

= 0.5

Between these, the smallest mole is that of Nitrogen, So,

Simplest Ratio of Mg = 0.75/0.5

= 2

Simplest Of N = 0.5/0.5

= 1

Empirical Formula = Mg₂N

I hope this helps.
