As the equivalent mass is Molar mass divided by n factor.

we define n factor as no. of electron obtained during balancing a chemical reaction by ion electron method.

This can be understood by following,

2IO4- +8H+ ---> I2+4H2O+ 6e^-

Therefore equivalent mass will be M/6.

Hope you get your answer.
