What is the equivalent resistance if three resistances R1,R2,R3 are connected in series?

Answer:

If three resistances R1,R2,R3 are connected in series, the equivalent resistance will be 45 ohm.

(i) Current through 5 ohm = V/R = 12/5 = 2.4A

Current through 10 ohm = V/R = 12/10 = 1.2A

Current through 30 ohm = V/R = 12/30 = 0.4A

(ii) Total Current in the circuit = 2.4 + 1.2 + 0.4 = 4 A

(iii) Total Resistance in the circuit = (R1R2 + R2R3 + R3R1)/R1R2R3

                                                       = [5(10) + 10(30) +30(5)]/5(10)(30)

                                                       = [50 + 300 + 150]/1500

                                                       = 500/1500

                                                       = 1/3 ohm
