What is the 'ether'?(related to waves and not the compund in chemistry).. can anyone plz tell me the concept of ether which was discontinued because of Here Albert Einstein's theory?

Before it was discontinued it was believed there is something very small present everywhere in universe and light is particle which travel space because of ether it was later proved there is nothing like ether and light has wave nature thats why it can travel space
