The Bell Jar Experiment is a common experiment used to demonstrate that sound needs a medium to travel.

Sound waves simply the pressure at a point in the medium that oscillates as time passes and has different values at different points at the same instant. It is the elastic properties of the medium that is responsible for the propagation of this disturbance ( sound ) in a medium. The speed of this type of wave(mechanical wave) is determined by the elastic as well as interia properties of the medium.

EM waves is a bit different. The light waves need no material medium to travel. They can propagate in vacuum. These are nonmechanical waves and their speed is independent of nature of medium.
