Hi there
Your answer is : British came to India in 1608 for trade.
In 1498, Vasco da Gama first came to India in search of trade prospects. He was a Portuguese. It was the first time the Europeans discovered the route to India.
After this, the French and Dutch started coming to India for trade.
British came last. Initially they were engaged in trade of cotton, silk, indigo dye, salt, saltpetre, tea and opium. Later, they built an empire in India (for even more trade & tax, which they sent to England making it the most powerful kingdom) and ruled us from 1757 till 1947 - for 190 years.
Thank You
