The idea that the electronic energies
present inside the atom were quantised was proposed by several eminent
scientists. However, one of the most famous theories that led to the discovery
of the above statement was put forward by Ernest Rutherford, known for his
path-breaking gold foil experiment.
Rutherford summarised that the
electrons in an atom revolved around the nucleus. However, as pointed out by
Neils Bohr, the electrons should have collided into the nucleus on account of
the continuous radiation emitted due to an accelerating charged particle.
Keeping this in mind, Bohr proposed
the existence of quantised electronic energy states inside an atom
