The idea that the electronic energies present inside the atom were quantised was proposed by several eminent scientists. However, one of the most famous theories that led to the discovery of the above statement was put forward by Ernest Rutherford, known for his path-breaking gold foil experiment.

Rutherford summarised that the electrons in an atom revolved around the nucleus. However, as pointed out by Neils Bohr, the electrons should have collided into the nucleus on account of the continuous radiation emitted due to an accelerating charged particle.

Keeping this in mind, Bohr proposed the existence of quantised electronic energy states inside an atom.
