In a storm, like a tropical cyclone, the “eye” is the calmest part of the storm.

To understand why, we need to look at the structure of tropical cyclones.

Tropical cyclones occur when a low-level weather depression (low-pressure system), whether it’s from a “chunk” of the Intertropical Convergence Zone or no, moves into a section of the ocean that has a lot of warm water, plenty of moisture, and a cool upper atmosphere. The depression allows the water vapor (which comes from the ocean) to rise high into the atmosphere, where it cools and forms clouds. These clouds lower the air pressure, allowing more water vapor to rise. Eventually, we get a cluster of thunderstorms that spin around as one system. Once winds reach 74 mph, we get a hurricane, a cyclone, a typhoon, or whatever name your folks give such a storm.
