I’ll give some suggestions for the fastest on earth in terms of “naturally” occurring phenomena. Of course, light can be considered as natural or common experience, but I’m thinking of things like the speed of winds in a tornado, hurricane and storms with fierce shear winds. But I don’t think any of these are known to exceed the speed of sound.I wonder of there is any natural event on this planet that exceeds the speed of sound beyond man-made objects or projectiles. I’m confident someone out there will be able to tell me. Volcanic explosions might be a candidate, creating a shock wave both in the medium of the earth’s crust and in air. I guess I’m looking for a natural phenomenon that produces a boom like a jet as it breaks the sound barrier. I’ve heard that such a plane carries or sweeps along behind it a cone-shaped wake which can reach the earth’s surface if the plane flies low enough which we hear at different moments like a string of dominoes falling. When the intersection of the wake with the ground reaches our position, we hear a boom.
