Filtering unit of kidney is Nephron. Each kidney has millions of nephrons in the cortex and medulla region. Nephron has further parts Glomerulus,Bowmann's capsule etc.

Main functions of nephron is filtration of urine which passes through various stages in nephron for purification.

Nephron filters the blood then it reabsorbs all the useful substances from that filtrate and removes the rest(wastes and water) in the form of urine.
