• The metrical tale and historical account of Rajatarangini ("The River of Monarchs") focus on the kings of Kashmir in the northwestern region of India.
• In the 12th century CE, Kalhana, a historian from Kashmir, wrote it in Sanskrit. Eight volumes, known as tarangas, totalling 7826 verses, make up the work ("waves").
• The Rajataringini is the first literature on Kashmir that can legitimately be referred to as "historical."
