what is the first law of motion? give an example.

☞ Newton’s first law states that a body remains in the state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line until an external force acts on it.
☞ The motion of a ball falling down is an example of Newton's first law.
☞ The motion of an airplane when the pilot changes the throttle setting of the engine is also an example of Newton's first law.
❒ Based on Galileo's observation od the nature of state of the body, Newton formulated some laws of motion. These laws are known as Newton's laws of motion.
Every body remains in the state of rest or uniform motion in any direction (straight line) unless and until compelled by any external unbalanced force. So, we can say that,
- An external force is required to acclerate or to move a body. This force should be Unbalanced such that net force is not equals to 0.
- It explains the Inertia that is the tendency of a body to continies its state of rest or uniform motion.
➤ Depending upon the State of change, Inertia is of three types, That are:
- Inertia of Rest: It is the tendency of the body to remain in the stste of rest unless an external unbalanced force acts on it.
Example:- When a vechile starts suddenly, we fall backward because our foot is in contact with the vevjile which started suddenly, but our upper body is maintaining its state of rest.
- Inertia of motion: It is the tendency of the body to continue its state of motion until and unless compelled by any external Unbalanced force.
Example:- When vehicle stops suddenly, we fall forward because of the same reason as above. Our upper body is maintaining the state of motion.
- Inertia of Direction: It is the tendency of a body to keep its direction same along the same straight line unless and until compelled by an external Unbalanced force.
Example:- We are pushed towards right or left and it seems that we are falling when the vehicle takes a sharp turn. Here, the body is trying to maintain its direction.

Mass and Inertia:
A larger force is required to move a heavier box than a lighter box. Here, force depends on Inertia and hence Inertia depends on the mass of the body. A body has greater mass, has greater inertia.
- Mass is the measure of Inertia.
